Michael Kyle é um homem carinhoso, casado com uma mulher bonita e próspera, e pai de três crianças saudáveis. Típica família feliz? Não para Michael. Ele gostaria que toda sua família tivesse um comportamento diferente.
Para Michael, seu filho adolescente teria que curtir os clássicos de Michael Jackson e Barry White, não bandas de rap com nomes ameaçadores. Sua filhinha de 12 anos seria doce e ainda brincaria de boneca, ao invés de ser temperamental e usar roupas curtas e maquiagem para impressionar os garotos da escola. E a caçula seguiria tudo que papai dissesse, ao invés de contestá-lo e impor suas vontades.
Michael acha que sua mulher deveria ser a típica dona de casa e mãe zelosa, daquelas que passam o dia todo cuidando da casa e dos filhos, preparando o jantar para quando todos chegarem, e não uma trabalhadora em ascensão, que acaba de receber um convite de para ficar no escritório em período integral.
Sua maior realização é ver a família reunida à mesa, mesmo que na maior gritaria e com discussões entre as crianças. Ele vai lutar para ter isto, mesmo que o conceito de família seja muito diferente no mundo de hoje…
